Where to take your environments when Ona Cloud, formerly Gitpod, closes on October 31, 2026: Prized, Codex Cloud, GitHub Codespaces, Coder and DevPod, with when each fits better, each fact from the vendor's own pages, checked October 27, 2026.

Ona Cloud, formerly Gitpod, closes on October 31, 2026. New sign-ups have already closed, and environments do not move anywhere by themselves (Ona's notice). Save your code and files first (Moving from Ona, step 1), then pick where the work goes.
Pick one
- A cloud machine per developer that keeps its disk, with no maximum run time: Prized. Your
.gitpod.ymlordevcontainer.jsonbecomes a setup script; with theprizedCLI connected, ports open on your localhost by themselves, and coding agents keep working with the laptop closed (Moving from Ona). - Background agents on your ChatGPT plan: Codex Cloud. It is where Ona's notice points. Each task gets its own VM from an environment Codex sets up and tests with you; you review its changes and open a PR, rather than working on a machine yourself.
- An environment per branch from devcontainer.json, on your GitHub bill: GitHub Codespaces. It has prebuilds, and a codespace stops at 12 hours, even while you use it.
- Everything on your own infrastructure: Coder. You run the control plane and the workspaces, defined in Terraform templates.
- Free, open source and client-only: DevPod. It builds your devcontainer.json on any cloud, a Kubernetes cluster or local Docker. Its latest stable release is v0.6.15, from March 2025.
Side by side
| What you get | Your Gitpod or Ona config | Longest run | Price | Free use | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prized | A dedicated VM (Ubuntu 24.04) per box that keeps its disk | A setup script; devcontainer.json builds on the box with the Dev Containers CLI | No maximum; on the free credit, a box pauses after 2 idle hours | $0.068 an hour for an Extra Small (2 vCPU, 8 GB, 150 GB disk) | $30 of credit once, no card, for one box from Nano to Small |
| Codex Cloud | A VM per task (2 vCPU, 8 GiB on Plus) that the agent works in; you review its changes | An environment Codex prepares from your repos and tests with you, saved as an install script and a start skill | One task; its saved state is kept up to 7 days after the last turn | In a ChatGPT plan: Plus, at $20 a month, lists Codex on the web | Included in the plan, up to its usage limits |
| GitHub Codespaces | A Docker container on a VM dedicated to it | devcontainer.json | 12 hours, even while you use it | $0.18 an hour for 2 cores and 8 GB, storage billed apart | 120 core-hours and 15 GB-month a month on a personal GitHub Free account; none for organizations |
| Coder | What your Terraform template defines: a VM, a container or a Kubernetes pod | Terraform templates; dev containers supported | Set by your templates and schedules | Your cloud's price; Premium is priced per user | Community edition, free |
| DevPod | A dev container on the machine your provider creates | devcontainer.json | Set by you and your provider | Your cloud's price | Free and open source |
Prized does not read .gitpod.yml or .ona/config.yaml itself; Moving from Ona maps each part to a line of a setup script. Codespaces, Coder and DevPod side by side, with files, ports and editors: Prized vs GitHub Codespaces, Coder and DevPod.
Moving to Prized
- Save your work in Ona before October 31: push your code, copy out files that are not in git, and note your secrets (Moving from Ona).
- Get a box: sign up at prized.dev; the tour starts a box on $30 of free credit, with no card (Quickstart).
- Bring the environment: turn
.gitpod.ymlinto a setup script, or build the repo's devcontainer.json on the box (Use your devcontainer.json).
Common questions
Is Gitpod shutting down?
Gitpod renamed itself Ona in September 2025, and Ona Cloud closes on October 31, 2026, after Ona joined OpenAI. Ona refunds October payments and unused purchased credits.
Will my Ona environments move anywhere automatically?
No. Ona says its environments do not move to Codex by themselves, so push your code and copy out other files before October 31.
What is the closest thing to a Gitpod workspace?
For a workspace per branch built from devcontainer.json: GitHub Codespaces. For one machine per developer that keeps its disk between sessions: a Prized box. An environment gives every new box the same repos and setup script, like an Ona project.
What does Ona recommend instead?
Codex Cloud, OpenAI's coding agent in the cloud, on your ChatGPT account. It runs tasks and hands back their results rather than giving you a machine; to run agents such as Claude Code or Codex on a machine of your own that stays on, use a box (Keep Claude Code running, Run Codex in the cloud).
