GitHub Codespaces alternatives
Updated
Five GitHub Codespaces alternatives for a cloud dev environment (Prized, Coder, DevPod, Google Cloud Workstations, and a VM of your own) with when each fits better and where Codespaces still wins, each fact from the vendor's own pages, checked October 27, 2026.

GitHub Codespaces runs each codespace in a container on its own VM that GitHub hosts, bills it by the hour, and stops it at 12 hours even while you use it. The alternatives differ mostly in who runs the machine and how long it stays on. Ona Cloud, formerly Gitpod, closes on October 31, 2026, so it is not on this list (Gitpod and Ona Cloud alternatives).
Pick one
- A hosted machine that stays on, with your files and ports on your laptop: Prized. A box per developer with no maximum run time; the project folder syncs both ways, ports 3000 to 9999 open on your localhost with the
prizedCLI connected and no editor open, and coding agents keep working with the laptop closed. Boxes are x86_64 with no GPU. - Everything on your own infrastructure: Coder. You run the control plane and the workspaces, defined in Terraform templates; air-gapped works.
- Free, open source and client-only: DevPod. It builds your devcontainer.json on any cloud, a Kubernetes cluster or local Docker, with nothing to host. Its latest stable release is v0.6.15, from March 2025.
- Your company runs on Google Cloud: Cloud Workstations. Managed workstations inside your own Google Cloud project and VPC, under IAM, opened in a browser IDE, JetBrains, VS Code or SSH.
- Just a Linux machine, run by you: a VM of your own from any cloud, opened with VS Code Remote-SSH. You pay only the cloud's price; setup, updates, security and backups are yours.
- Stay on Codespaces for an environment per branch built from devcontainer.json, with prebuilds, on your GitHub bill, or for a few hours a month on a personal account: its free use comes back every month, where Prized's $30 of credit comes once.
Side by side
| Who runs it | Longest run | 2 vCPU and 8 GB, an hour | Free use | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Codespaces | GitHub | 12 hours, even while you use it; stops after 30 idle minutes by default | $0.18 (2-core, 32 GB disk; the storage it uses billed apart) | Each month on a personal account: 120 core-hours and 15 GB-month on GitHub Free, 180 and 20 on Pro; none for organizations |
| Prized | Prized | No maximum; on the free credit, a box pauses after 2 idle hours | $0.068 (Extra Small, 150 GB disk included) | $30 of credit once, no card, for one box from Nano to Small |
| Coder | You, on your infrastructure | Set by your templates and schedules | Your cloud's price | Community edition, free; Premium is priced per user |
| DevPod | You: a client on your computer creates the machine | Set by you and your provider | Your cloud's price | Free and open source |
| Google Cloud Workstations | Google, inside your Google Cloud project | 12 hours by default, which an admin can change; stops after 20 idle minutes by default | $0.167 (e2-standard-2, Iowa), plus the disk and $0.20 an hour for each cluster (about $144 a month), shared by every workstation in it | New Google Cloud accounts' $300 of credit, for 90 days |
Prices are list prices before discounts. A Prized box's hour includes its disk, and asleep it pays for that whole disk: $0.015 an hour for an Extra Small, about $10.95 a month, so a stopped codespace storing a few GB costs less to keep (Billing). The full table with Coder and DevPod, files, ports and editors is on Prized vs GitHub Codespaces, Coder and DevPod.
Moving to Prized
- Get a box: sign up at prized.dev; the tour starts a box on $30 of free credit, with no card (Quickstart).
- Bring the environment: run
prized setupin the project folder to copy your tools, or build the repo's devcontainer.json on the box (Bring your environment, Use your devcontainer.json). - Open it: Cursor or VS Code over Remote-SSH, or keep editing locally with sync.
Common questions
What is the best GitHub Codespaces alternative?
It depends on who should run the machine: Prized for a hosted one with no time limit and your files on your laptop, Coder on your own infrastructure, DevPod for free and client-only, and Cloud Workstations inside Google Cloud.
Is there a free alternative to GitHub Codespaces?
DevPod and Coder's Community edition are free software, but you pay your cloud for the machines. Codespaces' own free use, 120 core-hours a month on a personal GitHub Free account, is 60 hours on 2 cores; Prized gives $30 of credit once, which runs an Extra Small box about 440 hours awake.
Is there a Codespaces alternative without the 12-hour limit?
Yes. A Prized box has no maximum run time, and coding agents keep running in a session on it after you close the laptop (Keep Claude Code running). Self-hosted Coder and DevPod run as long as your own setup allows, and Cloud Workstations as long as an admin sets, with its 12-hour default raised or turned off.
Can I keep using devcontainer.json?
Yes. DevPod builds it directly, Coder supports dev containers, and on a Prized box you build it with the Dev Containers CLI, with nothing Prized-specific in the file (Use your devcontainer.json).
